The Meaning and Types of Education in the Contemporary Society

The definition of education says that it is a process of acquiring and achieving knowledge through learning or study or imparting the learning or knowledge through instructions or any other means of procedures. In a simpler understanding, education is a process through which one can bring positive changes in his or her behaviour and life. Indeed, education brings lasting and natural change in many aspects of life particularly in promoting the powers of reasoning. It creates the capabilities to achieve the intended goal in life. Education facilitates the processes of investigation of one’s own thought and helps him or her to appropriately express the thought in proper shape. Education is the basis of deciding right and wrong. Eventually, leaving the wrong path saves an individual from failure, and walking on the right path leads him or her towards achieving the goal as well as the success. Achievement in life through education is possible only through gaining aptitude and information which shape the frame of mind which is again given by education. The second important aspect of education is the capacity of conflict resolution. Education provides innovation and imaginary problem-solving skills which help us sort out different problems in life. Thus, education is essential more than anything else and so education has been given the status of one of the minimum needs among food, cloth, shelter, and health.
There are basically three types of education namely (1) formal education or formal learning, (2) non-formal education, and (3) in-formal education. Formal education is what we see in a formal educational institution like a school, college, university etc. In the formal learning process, we learn academic, basic and trade-related skills. Though kids begin their education in kindergarten or nursery which is often termed as formal education, the formal learning actually begins in the elementary level and continues in secondary, college and university level. This formally leads the students through a process of rules and regulations and eventually provides successful students with an academic degree.
Non-formal education involves adult education or adult literacy program which are equivalent to formal education or preparation for formal education. In non-formal education, one can learn basic education or skills education or job skills without going to formal school.
Informal education is something like a parent teaching the child how to cook or how to ride a bicycle. Many people learn through informal education by reading a lot in a library or through a website. It does not involve any learning methodology, rules and regulation, and not in any school or college, rather can be learnt at any place or situation.
